March 2008

Members,

We want to update you on the status of the leased land and inform you of several upcoming events. We would also like for every RCC member to complete the survey below and return it to the address in the letterhead above so that we can serve the needs and the interests of the club in the most efficient manner possible.

RCC has a new website!  The address is www.rileycc.com.  The site includes a club calendar, membership information, club rules, contacts for the various competitive disciplines held at RCC, and other related club information.

The Land Purchase Committee which was formed at the January meeting has met with Mancil Robinson who represents Black Beauty Coal Company.  The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the offer the Riley Conservation Club proposed for the purchase of the land we currently lease as part of the conservation club.  The offer was not accepted.  However, it appears at this time that there is no other viable offer pending for the land and that the land will remain ours to lease for the foreseeable future.  This is not the best response we were hoping for, but it is also not the worst.  Communications will remain open between RCC and Black Beauty and we remain hopeful that we will be able to purchase some or all of the land at some point in the future.

The club will be having a work day on Saturday, March 22, 2008, beginning at 9:00am.  The backup date in case of bad weather will be the following Saturday, March 29, 2008.  Should we postpone to the backup date, notice will be given via our new website at www.rileycc.com.  The list of tasks we wish to accomplish includes:

The club will purchase all needed materials prior to the work day so we will be ready to go!

RCC in conjunction with Wabash Valley Practical Pistol Shooters will hold Steel Challenge type matches on the first Saturday of each month beginning in April.  The profits from this match will be going directly to RCC.  Club members are encouraged to participate in this match to benefit the club. Activities like this and the air gun matches will help accumulate funds for the club and keep membership dues low.

Steel shooting is a rapidly growing sport in the shooting community.  Competitors, using pistols of all calibers or .22 rimfire rifles (ideally magazine fed to accommodate reloading between strings of fire), engage five steel targets in various configurations. Your time for hitting each of the five targets is your score.  Each of the five targets must be hit during each string of fire and a
designated stop plate will be hit last to stop the time.  The competitor shoots each course of fire five times and the four fastest times count toward your score.  Each match will consist of four or five course of fire.  Total score for all stages will determine the match champion in each division.

Steel shooting is a great sport for beginner, junior and lady shooters, as well as those with more experience.  Unlike some other action pistol sports, there is no movement and no need to reload (usually) during a course of fire.  It is a great way for anyone to either begin competing or for the experienced shooter to hone his skills.
